It is the changes in government regulations and the lowered costs provided by the large engineering efforts put into improvements in manufacturing efficiencies that have caused the wide spread use of electronic items.

The first is to fool mother nature. I have noticed that physicists frequently fall into this category. They want a design that has performance parameters that cannot be economically done in the current state of technology.
