We always start simple. What are the degrees of freedom and the limiting factors? For this we knew the throw of the vision system in the Z direction and the X direction. The next question is where is the power coming from?

We had plenty of power for DC, Servo, or Stepper Motors. Thankfully we made use of some standard servos and drive cards to do the X movement. For the Z component we selected a large shaft pneumatic cylinder. This cylinder required less cabling for the same small throw of the vision system. Remember that for small movements or tight spots – if you have air – that can be a much easier route than a motor.
The final assemblies made use of common components and flexible mechanical designs. CAD is our game and we always win. We started DFM early to keep component common and interchangeable onsite.

Michael studied Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina State University. He specializes in mechanical drafting services. After university, he worked for proprietary robotic development companies focused on automating manual tasks for various Fortune 500 companies like Rx Medic & CASI. Along with automation, Michael has designed products for the everyday inventor and consumer electronics for large manufacturers.

Steven graduated from College with a degree in Engineering from Montana State University, where two other passions were discovered: rugby and traveling. After college Steven worked for John Deere helping to test their latest construction equipment, but wanting to make more of a difference in product development. Next he moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 2014 and joined several start up companies over 8 years developing products in solar, batteries, consumer electronics and hydrogen energy storage.

Josef attended Oregon State University where he earned a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering. While there he participated in the robotics club, helping gain notoriety for OSU by winning the 2010 Mars Rover Competition. Josef’s professional career as a manufacturing engineer has spanned the last 15 years in the Food, Aerospace, and Firearms industry.

Tyler graduated from the University of Missouri Columbia, Alliant Techsystems (ATK), a defense contractor, hired Tyler as a Manufacturing Engineer, producing small and medium caliber munitions. Tyler has designed products for companies such as: Nike, Adidas, Keen, Coca-Cola, to name a few. He is an expert in mechanical drafting services..
