The problem we identified is that astronauts will have Periodontitis occur more often in space because astronauts cannot have proper dental checkups. Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as Periodontitis, is a serious gum infection that destroys the gums, and can damage the jawbone if proper treatment is not acquired.

Our Solution Report

The Plac-Trac App is an mobile application that measures the amount of plaque on teeth. It senses the amount of purple tones left after using commercially-available plaque disclosing tablets. The measurement of purple tones are made using color-based segmentation (clustering). By tracking plaque with time through a long-duration mission, the Plac-Trac App scores help astronauts understand their dental health situation and connects them to their oral health the same way blood-pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol scores do.
