When I first called Dave with A. M. Structural Engineering I was happy to know that he is knowledgeable with our area and the ground conditions that exist. I was blown away that he was able to come to our house that same day. Dave was very helpful and very upfront with us about our situation. He did a great job of assessing our home and giving us advice on our concerns. We will be using them again in the future.

The engineers at A.M. Structural Engineering were kind when speaking over the phone, and explained that they could come out and take a look at our home. We set a time and the engineer was very professional on the way he handled himself. My reasons for 1 star are as mostly do to the companies lack of contract or website description of cost structure.
So after receiving the bill in the mail for $310.00 for a preliminary engineer quote I requested. Engineering rate is $124.00 an hour He spend about 45 minutes at my home doing measurement, while I explained what I wanted to do. Drive time was about 30 minutes one way (total about 1 hour round trip). Additional time to do preliminary calculations was an additional 45 minutes (at his office).
All totally about 2 hours which came to a grand total of $310.00 I'll say this much, I've worked with other Structural Engineers in the past, but they have a whole different cost structure for drive time that isn't at the Engineering rate. This is what I think the drive time cost should be: The national average of cost to drive a mile is about.608 cents per mile (Google: "National average cost per mile").
To be generous I'll round up to $1 a mile. It was about 50 miles round trip which would put it at $50.00 for travel time. The best I could calculate would be: 45 minutes doing measurement $93.00 ($124.00 Engineering (rate) X.75 hours (time)) 45 minutes preliminary Calculation $93.00 ($124.00 Engineering (rate) X.75 hours (time)) 60 minutes drive time with an estimate of $50 (50 miles x $1.00 a mile) At best I could see it costing $236.00 for everything, but that he charges Engineering rate for drive time makes me skeptical, and my advice to you is beware and before accepting this companies work, make sure you understand all the cost, so you don't get a surprise in the mail like I did. Based on my unfair bill in the mail for a preliminary quote (and my explanation above), I would not recommend this company.
