The La Jolla Bioengineering Institute is a non-profit research institution that specializes in research on diseases whose origin and treatment are rooted in cell membrane mechanics. Such diseases include arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis and Alzheimer's. Related research thrusts are malarial pathogenesis, microcirculatory physiology, nitric oxide biology and the development of blood substitutes.
Services
The heart of the Institute's research is to determine how mechanical forces play a role in the normal physiology and pathology of blood vessels, bone, and muscle. The Institute uses an interdisciplinary approach that involves fluid and solid mechanics and molecular and cell biology to answer this fundamental question.
